17 Day Tour with option to extend to 21 days in order to reach Nordkapp the most Northernly point in Europe accessible by car/bike.
Day 1. We all gather at the Mayflower Premier Inn which is a stone’s throw from the Harwich Ferry Terminal where Haggis Tours will do a meet and greet. We then embark on the ferry for our overnight voyage. Once on board you are free to either settle down for the night or have a beer with us so we can all get to know each other and start your Scandinavian adventure.
Day 2. After a decent night’s rest on the ferry (hopefully nice and calm) and a good breakfast we all start our tour proper by exploring our way across Holland taking in the 20 mile Afsluitdjk causeway. We then cross into Germany and cross the mighty Elbe River on the first of many ferries. We use a mix of roads today, to make the best use of our time to get to Norway and make the journey enjoyable. We finish the day in Itzehoe, Germany. (NOTE: It’s usual to filter to the front of the queue at ferries, and is actively encouraged in Norway to make best use of space on board.)
Day 3. After breakfast we set off from Itzehoe, then leave Germany heading north through Denmark via a scenic route passing Limfjorden and finishing our day at the top of the Jutland Peninsula in the seaport of Hirtshals where we will overnight ready for our morning crossing to Norway. (NOTE: Denmark use their own currency- Danish Kronor. They will take Euros but your change will be given in Krona which can only be used in Denmark or on the Ferry).
Day 4. After breakfast, to maximise our time in Norway we will use the fast ferry crossing from Hirtshals to Kristiansand. On re-grouping after disembarkation we head for the mountains and get straight into Norway’s stunning scenery of the Vest-Agder region. This will give you a taste of what to expect for the rest of our tour. We contemplate the days ride at our accommodation for the night near Sandnes.
Day 5. Today, utilising parts of the Nasjonale Turistveger Ryfylke (National Tourist Route:NTR) we head up the stunning E13 with a day of contrasts. High barren mountains, lush hillsides, sheer mountains and deep fjords, it has it all. We pass nearby the Prejkestolen (pulpit rock) area and make our way to the stunning Låtefossen waterfalls via a couple of small ferries and lots of tunnels. With plenty of time to take in the breathtaking scenery, we will end our day in Odda with the magnificent Flogefonna Glacier high above.
Day 6. We are heading to stunning Aurland today, via parts of the NTR Hardanger. On the way there we will by riding around some Fjords, though road tunnels with a surprise inside them, crossing over one of the longest single span suspension bridges in the world and the longest tunnel to tunnel bridge in the world (the Hardanger Bridge) and also traveling some stunning scenic roads.
Day 7. Today is a rest day and time to yourself. You can relax in this UNESCO World Heritage Site and take in the local scenery, watching the cruise liners heading to Flam or go to the Stegastein viewpoint, visit a glacier (Jostedalsbreen) if you like or ride the famous 12 mile long Flamsbana railway, described as one of the most exciting railway journeys in the world or for the more cultural experience go and explore Undredal Stavkyrkje Church (built 1150) or Vangen Kyrkje church (built 1202). Its your choice.
Day 8. What a day- we start with a stunning 1300 metre pass over the Horndalen (there is a great viewing platform, Stegastein, looking back over Aurland) , or you can chose to drive through Laerdalstunnelen one of the longest tunnels in the world at 24kms long. Take a visit to the 12th century Borgund stave church before heading towards Fagernes where we pick up the NTR Valdresflye, traversing the outstanding Jotunheimen National Park to our nights’ accommodation in Vagamo.
Day 9. The BIG ONE - we leave Vagamo and head North East for the Dalsnibba viewpoint where we will look down on to and along the mighty Geiranger Fjord that makes the cruise liners look like ants on the water. When we eventually manage to pull you away from the viewpoint we join NTR Geiranger - Trollstigen down the valley through a series of bends into Geiranger for a break and sightseeing. We then climb aboard our bikes and continue on NTR Geiranger - Trollstigen tackling the hairpin bends to the top of the 620 metres , Ornevegen (Eagles road) where its difficult to keep your eye on the road because of the breathtaking scenery around every bend. We have a stop at the view point to take it all in, before moving to the serpentine hairpin bend Trollstigen (troll ladder) with the Stigfossen waterfall then you will finish your best ever biking day at Molde.
Day 10. Today we follow the coastal road and bridges of the iconic NTR: Atlantic Ocean Road. We visit Kristiansund via Atlanterhavstunnelen the deepest undersea tunnel in the world at 250m, we will then backtrack to our hotel in Geiranger the way we came yesterday as the riding and views were so good visiting it once is not enough.
Day 11. We drag you away from Geiranger where you can either traverse the staggeringly beautiful Gamle Strynefjellsvegen – built in 1881 it is Norway’s oldest tourist route which is listed as a landmark in its own right. It is a partially unpaved road 27km along. We stop at the viewpoints of Ovstefossen and Videfossen waterfalls. Alternatively if you do not want to travel on the unpaved road there is a shortcut through a tunnel and you can have a little more time to explore the area. We finish the day in Forde.
Day 12. Leaving Forde we follow part of the NTR: Gaularfjellethead which is labelled as a well-kept secret. The drive skirts the fjord before snaking up towards the highest point of Gaularfjellet. We head over the mountains to Dragsvik where we catch a ferry to Vangsnes and make our way down to Bergen with time to explore this stunning city.
Day 13. The city break- today is your time for you to catch your breath and to explore Bergen with its beautiful wooden buildings and Harbours. You can visit the fish market and enjoy a drink and bite to eat in this historic city. Or take one of the many mini Fjord cruises that depart daily from here.
Day 14. Leaving Bergen behind we go Island hopping following the coast south, crossing the Fjords by bridges, tunnels and ferries, heading down to our overnight stop near Stavanger.
Day 15. Another full on packed day. After a short ferry crossing we head to the Lysebotn Fjord for a cruise passing the impressive Pulpit Rock and Kjaragbolten from the water. After docking at Lysebotn we climb from sea level via 27 hairpins of the Lysevegen Road summit and in a land of contrasts onto even more captivating scenery. Heading east we join the wonderful sweeping open road to catch your breath and savour the delights of Norway on our return to Kristiansand, We overnight here, where there is a great harbour scene near the fish market that’s perfect for a last night dinner in Norway.
Day 16. We start today by getting the early ferry back to Hirtshals and transit through Denmark to our
overnight stop in Rendsburg, Germany. This particular route is chosen to maximise our time in Norway on this dramatic and sensational tour of a lifetime.
Day 17. For those returning home this is the last leg on mainland Europe of our Tour. We leave Rendsburg and travel through Germany and into Holland, with plenty of time to catch our late night ferry home from the Hook of Holland.
